The Craziest Car World Records

Discover 13 horse-powered achievements that may surprise you!

Many motorists aspire to be awarded an official Guinness World Record. From the longest limo to the hairiest car (yes, really!) we take a look at the craziest car world records that are bound to blow your mind, whilst giving you a giggle too!

The Longest Car

Back in 1986, the Guinness World Record for the longest car was set and surprisingly, hasn’t been beaten since! The custom-built limo was designed by American car specialist, Jay Ohrberg, and measures at an impressive 100ft (30.5 metres) long.

The lengthy limousine has no less than 26 wheels to carry the load which also features a king-sized bed inside, a swimming pool with a diving board. If that wasn’t enough, the limo has its very own helipad on the back too!

The Hairiest Car

It sounds crazy, but there really is a world record for the hairiest car! The record-breaking motor is an original Fiat 500 and is covered in a weighty 120kgs of...wait for it...human hair!

The car is owned by Italian hair stylist Maria Lucia Mugno, who has spent a bonkers 80,000 euros (£71,137) covering her car in the hair which she sources from India. Surprisingly it’s still road-legal too!

The Big Banana

Think the British are bonkers? You may be right! UK resident Steve Braithwaite has earnt his world record by creating the longest custom-built banana car back in 2011. The vehicle measures 22ft, 10.5 inches in length (6.97 metres in total).

Dubbed ‘The Big Banana’, the bright yellow motor can seat up to four people and boasts a V8 engine making it capable of reaching speeds up to 85mph!

The Longest Wheelie

Wheelies are usually associated with motorcycles, but not this one... At the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex, stunt driver Mike “Nitro” Kunz performed an incredible world-record-achieving 763.4 metre wheelie, also known as a wheelstand.

We’re bet you’re wondering, how can he see whilst driving? Well, his specially designed car has a cut out in the floor for the daredevil to see when the front of the car is in the air.

The Most People in a Smart Car

We all know Smart cars are tiny, but perhaps the tardis-like cars are spacier than first thought… In 2011, America’s Glendale Cheerleading Team broke the world record for the most people crammed into a two-seater Smart car.

It’s hard to believe, but 20 boys and girls from the cheerleading team managed to squeeze themselves into every inch of the Smart car - now that is impressive!

The Coffee-powered Car

It may sound like an initiative proposed by the Government for a greener future of travel, but this coffee-based car world record was actually achieved back in 2010. The challenge was to drive the longest journey possible in a coffee powered car, cleverly dubbed the ‘car-puccino’.

UK resident Mr Bacon modified a 1988 Volkswagen Scirocco to achieve the record-breaker which saw him drive 337km from London to Manchester. How, you ask? Modifications allowed the car to heat coffee granules in a charcoal fire, releasing carbon monoxide and hydrogen gas which when cooled, was used to power the engine.

The Highest Mileage Car

Some things are built to last and this couldn’t be truer for Irvin Gordon’s trusty 1966 Volvo P1800S. His car has proved to be a reliable friend when on May 1st 1994, he broke the world record for the highest mileage car, clocking his 3,039,122nd mile - and it’s still going!

The Smallest Car

It may be cramped inside, but Brit Perry Watkins is very proud of his car called the ‘wind-up’ which holds the record for the smallest road-legal car. The motor measures a compact 41-inches in height, 26-inches in width, and a mere 52-inches in length.

The Longest Skid

We need to go way back to the 1960s for this one when the longest skid mark made by a car on a public road was recorded. On June 30th 1960, a Jaguar car was involved in an accident on the M1 near Luton in Bedfordshire where emergency services confirmed skid marks of 290 metres (950ft) at the scene!

The Fastest Police Car

Car thieves and wannabe racing drivers are in for a shock if caught in Dubai, as the local police force hold the world record for the fastest police car in service. In April 2016, they decided to invest in a Bugatti Veyron - one of the most powerful production cars in the world.

With a top speed of 253mph, the Veyron can hit 60mph in just 2.5 seconds to help police keep up with rich businessmen speeding in their super cars.

The Most Expensive Car

The most expensive car in the world will set you back a pretty penny and is yet to be beaten. In May 2018, the private sale of a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO (4153 GT) racing car hit the record books...

It cost new owner - American David MacNeil - a whopping 700,000 dollars (£52,730,800) and is one of the rarest and most desirable cars in the world; a mere 36 of them were built.

The Underwater Car

A car that can drive on land and be submerged in water? Surely not - unless in a James Bond film - but yes, it really is true! Swiss company Rinspeed has created the world's very-first underwater car called the sQuba which was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in 2008.

Although not currently in production, the sQuba will set you back a cool 1.4 million dollars and was inspired by the Lotus featured in the James Bond classic, ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’. The car can be driven on land and also fully submerge itself in water to depths of up to 10 metres (33 feet).

The Flying Car

Back in 2010, the Terrafugia Transition set the world record for the first flying car. Designed with foldable wings to fit in a household garage, the Terrafugia took its first flight in Washington DC after six long months of road testing.

Latin for ‘escape from the land’, Terrafugia runs on standard unleaded fuel and can reach distances of up to 450 miles, flying at a speed of 115mph. It will however set you back at least 200,000 dollars (around £132,000).
