With a continued focus on improving the air quality in our capital city, an Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has been in force since April of last year.It operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year (except Christmas Day) in the same boundaries as the Congestion Charge.
ULEZ charges are based on the Euro 6 emissions standards. These standards first appeared in 1992 and established limits for air polluting emissions such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) from engines. It is now a regulation that all new vehicles and road vehicle engines must meet these limits to be approved for sale.
Any vehicles which do not meet them must pay a daily charge to drive within the zone. The fees are fairly straightforward. They are set at £12.50 per day for most vehicle types, including cars, motorcycles and vans (up to and including 3.5 tonnes). Heavier vehicles such as lorries (over 3.5 tonnes) and buses/coaches (over 5 tonnes) will be charged £100 per day. And there is no way of escaping them as they are enforced by TfL’s vast camera network.
Of course, the positive effects of a reduction in exhaust NOx and PM emissions will be far reaching and beneficial to people in the capital, particularly those with respiratory problems.
If you are thinking it is time to trade up for a ULEZ-compliant car, then Wilsons has some superb models available for you to consider across all the marques available with us. Models like the fabulous city car, the Hyundai i10, which comes with premium air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity and fantastically low mileage. Or the award-winning Nissan Qashqai+2, a seven-seat family SUV with stand out style. But it’s models like the all-electric Nissan LEAF with cutting edge electric motoring technology, zero-emission performance and intelligent driving that are leading the way in green driving.
