What is the Motability Scheme?

A registered charity in the UK, the Motability Scheme enables disabled people and war pensioners to drive a new car that has been specially adapted to their needs. Eligible motorists are able to use funding provided by the Government to lease a brand new car, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), scooter, or powered wheelchair in order to go about their everyday lives.

It’s all about accessibility and providing freedom to those who may otherwise be limited in their daily activities. Who is eligible for the Motability Scheme?

The Motability Scheme is open to individuals who receive one of the following:

Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP / AFIP)
Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Allowance (DLA)
Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Adult Disability Payment (ADP)
Higher Rate Mobility Component of Child Disability Payment (CDP)
War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)

There is no upper age limit for eligibility at the present time. As long as you have a valid driving licence and receive a qualifying mobility allowance (with at least 12 months remaining) then you can apply to join the scheme.

What is a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle?

A Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (or WAV for short) is a vehicle that has been converted to enable a disabled driver or passenger to either travel in their wheelchair, or safely stow it while driving.

WAVs are designed to be entirely wheelchair friendly and provide the option to travel without having to leave it behind. Depending on their ability, wheelchair users can choose to sit within the vehicle in their wheelchair, or still use a standard seat.

Available in a range of sizes, WAVs can be fitted with a ramp or lift at the rear of the vehicle, or can be designed to enable side access instead. There is a whole range of options available to ensure the vehicle is accessible as possible.

When you become part of the Motability Scheme, you’ll benefit from the many adaptations available to meet your individual needs. Does the Motability Scheme offer nil deposit deals?

As with any kind of finance or lease deal, the Motability Scheme offers access to a range of cars with no advance payment needed. There are of course fewer nil deposit deals around than those with an upfront payment, so you may be more limited in your choice of vehicle.

When opting for a zero advance payment deal, you will simply use your weekly mobility allowance to lease a car without any upfront payment in order to kick-start your agreement.
