How does Chery compare to Other Chinese Brands?

In recent years, British roads have seen an increase in Chinese brands alongside European, Japanese and Korean brands. Brands like Chery, Omoda, BYD, and Jaecoo have become more popular, and they’ve started to appear in showrooms.

Here at Wilsons Motor Group in Epsom, Surrey, we stock the Chery Tiggo range, a longstanding Chinese brand and a respected manufacturer in China and now here in the UK.

Chinese cars are extremely attractive thanks to their affordability and EV technology, providing motorists with a great driving experience at almost half the price of other longstanding European, Korean and Japanese brands.

But how does Chery compare to other Chinese brands? And why should you buy a Chery rather than a BYD?

We’ll be looking at how the most popular Chinese brands here in the UK compare, exploring their similarities and differences.

Key Takeaways

  • Chery is the most affordable option among the Chinese brands available in the UK
  • All Chinese brands covered offer strong standard equipment and safety credentials.
  • Chery, Omoda and Jaecoo all share the same parent company, but they target very different buyers
  • BYD is the only brand in this group that sells exclusively electrified vehicle

Chery is the Family-Focused All-rounder

Chery is the largest Chinese manufacturer, and although its name might be new to British roads, it’s well established on Chinese ones.

The Chery Group offers compact SUVs at affordable prices. It’s become the largest Chinese car exporter, with over 17 million users worldwide.

If you take a look at their Tiggo range, one thing becomes clear: Chery targets buyers looking for a family car. Their size is a touch larger than that of other SUVs on the market, and it provides a high-tech feel at a very affordable price.

The Tiggo range comes in two trims: Aspire and Summit, with the latter being the more luxurious version, including extra speakers, a heated steering wheel and more.

Their entry car, the Tiggo 4 Super Hybrid, is currently the cheapest SUV on the market, starting at just under £20,000, and has become a top pick for many UK motorists. If you upgrade to the Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid, you gain a more spacious, luxurious interior. The Tiggo range is then completed by the Tiggo 8 and 9 Super Hybrid, both of which are 7-seater SUVs, with the Tiggo 8 providing a combined output of 204 PS and the Tiggo 9 delivering an impressive 428 PS. Both the Chery Tiggo 7 and 8 have received a 5-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, making them cars British motorists can rely on.

Overall, the Chery Tiggo offers a comprehensive family car experience with a luxurious, high-tech disposition, making it a compelling choice for family buyers who are seeking a reliable car. Their PHEV powertrain option is also perfect for those who want to go electric without the range anxiety that full-electric vehicles often come with.

BYD Offers the Widest Range From Budget to Premium

BYD (Build Your Dreams) is the most established Chinese brand in the UK. It entered the UK market in 2023 with the Atto 3, an SUV with a 5-star safety rating by the Euro NCAP

BYD now offers nine models in the UK, with the Ti7, a boxy 7-seater SUV, set to enter the UK market in 2026.

BYD is the brand for those who want an EV, as it only sells electrified vehicles and is on track to become the world’s largest PHEV manufacturer. Their models range from affordable city cars like the Dolphin Surf and SUVs like the Atto 3 to executive saloons like the Seal.

Having started as a battery company, they’re the global leader in battery technology and pioneered the famous Blade Battery, a cobalt-free lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, known for its safety, durability and space-saving cell-to-pack technology.

Their advanced technology adds a higher price tag to their models.

How does BYD compare to Chery

Overall, BYD offers superior software and high-tech features, combined with a minimalist and luxurious design, making it a more expensive option.

On the other hand, Chery follows European SUV design, offering increased interior space and comfort, combined with the beloved SUV feel at a very low price.

Chery is the better option if you want to drive a high-tech family SUV without worrying about your budget.

Omoda and Jaecoo: Chery's sportier and more premium offshoots

Both Omoda and Jaecoo are owned by Chery and launched as part of its strategy for the European market.

The difference between Chery and its sisters is the buyer they’re trying to target.

Omoda takes a sportier, coupe-influenced design approach. Its range includes the 5 (a compact petrol SUV), the E5 (the electric version), and the larger 7 and 9. The Omoda 9 is a plug-in hybrid that can cover up to 93 miles on electric power alone, making it one of the strongest performers in its class for electric-only range.

Jaecoo, meanwhile, leans into a more premium image with bold, distinctive styling. Its 5 and 7 SUVs offer petrol, electric, and plug-in hybrid options.

Overall, the biggest difference is price. Chery is quite aggressive on pricing, offering the most affordable alternative, which, for many working families, is what makes it so attractive. Both Omoda and Jaecoo have a more luxurious, sportier feel that, combined with their technology and design, makes them feel more high-end.

Changan: newer arrival, premium ambitions

Changan is one of China's oldest car makers, but it arrived in the UK only recently, in September 2025, focusing on electric and plug-in hybrid technology. Its current UK offerings are the Deepal S07, a midsize electric SUV, and the Deepal S05, with its futuristic design.

The S07 targets the premium end of the market. Every model comes with 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, an electric tailgate, dual-zone air conditioning, heated and ventilated front seats and adaptive cruise control as standard. It also carries an impressive five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, with an adult occupant protection score of 95%.

Once again, the comparison with the Chery Tiggo falls on price and design. The Chery Tiggo offers the traditional SUV design, highlighting space and practicality. The Deepal S07 is a fully electric vehicle with a Tesla-esque interior that wouldn’t be a major focus for a family buyer.

Which brand is right for you?

If you’ve been eyeing up a Chery, it’s probably because you want a compact SUV, and if you’re buying for a family car, the Chery suits buyers who want a practical, spacious car with genuine value for money and the option of PHEV efficiency.

BYD works best if you want a pure-electric car or need a wider choice of models across different price points.

Omoda and Jaecoo offer something a little different for buyers drawn to bolder styling or a more premium feel. And Changan is worth a look if a well-appointed, long-range electric SUV is the goal.

Chery is still a relatively new brand here in the UK, and we understand that unfamiliarity can make a purchase feel like a bigger step. Our team at Wilsons Motor Group in Epsom, Surrey, is happy to talk you through the options, answer any questions, and help you work out how a Chery Tiggo can fit your lifestyle and budget.

FAQs

Is Chery a reliable brand?

Chery is one of the world's largest car manufacturers, with over 17 million customers globally. Every model comes with a seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty. It's a brand with serious credentials, even if it's new to British roads.

What is the difference between Chery, Omoda and Jaecoo?

All three share the same parent company, Chery Group, but they target different buyers. Chery focuses on practical, affordable family SUVs. Omoda goes for a sportier, coupe-inspired look. Jaecoo leans into a more premium, distinctive style.

Should I buy a Chery or a BYD?

It depends on what you prioritise. BYD offers more advanced EV technology and a wider model range, but at a higher price. Chery gives you a spacious, high-tech family SUV at a significantly lower cost. If budget and practicality matter most, Chery is hard to beat.

Does Chery offer hybrid cars, or are they fully electric?

Chery offers hybrid cars. The Tiggo range comes with petrol engines and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) options, which combine a petrol engine with an electric motor for better efficiency. This makes Chery a strong choice if you want the benefits of electrification without committing fully to a pure EV.

How does Chery compare to Changan?

They're aimed at quite different buyers. Changan's Deepal S07 is a premium, fully electric SUV with a sleek, minimalist interior. Chery offers traditional SUV practicality, more interior space, seven-seat options, and a lower price. If family space and value matter more than premium tech, Chery is the stronger fit.
