It’s undeniable that Chinese cars have been on the rise in the UK market, and if you’ve been looking for a new car, you’ve probably heard the Chery name. It’s appearing in showrooms, on comparison sites, and in conversations about value-for-money SUVs on social media. However, whenever someone comes by and sees that we at Wilsons Motor Groups stock the Chery range, one of the most common questions is: Is the Chery actually any good?

Chery, also known as Chery Automobile Co. Ltd, is one of the most established car manufacturers in China. Founded in 1997, it’s grown into a global automotive group that exports to more than 80 countries. Chery is a state-owned company, but its business model now involves a mixture of government and private interests.
Chery now counts more than 17 million users worldwide and is the number one Chinese passenger car exporter, having exported 1.34 million cars in 2025 alone. While the name might be new to British showrooms, Chery is anything but a small, untested manufacturer.
Chery’s UK range currently centres on a family of SUVs under the Tiggo name:
Chery Tiggo 4 CSH: currently on sale from £19,995, it is the most affordable new SUV on the UK market. A compact SUV with a 1.5-litre engine featuring a self-charging mild hybrid turbo system (CSH), 53mpg fuel economy and a strong standard specification.
Chery Tiggo 7: starting from £24,995 is a mid-sized five-seat SUV with a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine engineered to provide a balanced blend of power and fuel efficiency.
Chery Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid: from £29,995, it’s a plug-in hybrid version of the Tiggo 7 that combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a powerful electric motor and a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT).
Chery Tiggo 8: from £28,545, it’s a larger seven-seat SUV sharing the Tiggo 7's drivetrain options.
Chery Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid: from £33,545, the plug-in hybrid version of the seven-seater, also offering 56 miles of electric range.
Chery Tiggo 9 Super Hybrid: from £43,106, featuring a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine and dual electric motors, which allow up to 91 miles of pure electric driving.
We said that most UK buyers are, rightly so, sceptical about Chery; this usually comes down to two main points: is Chery reliable and is it safe?
In terms of reliability, data in the UK is still limited, as Chery only launched here in 2025. However, we can review reliability data from other international markets where the brand is more established.
In Brazil, Chery debuted in 2020, and the Tiggo 8 has received high praise, winning awards from authoritative institutions, and it has now earned a Euro NCAP Five-Star Rating.
In Australia, the Tiggo 4 was the best-selling small SUV in July 2025, with 2,065 sales. It has also received a five-star ANCAP rating in 2024, with scores of 88% in adult occupancy protection, 87% in child occupancy protection, 79% for vulnerable road user protection, and 85% for safety assist.
Although the Tiggo is still new on UK roads, it’s slowly getting more reviews, placing it around the 4-star mark.
Another way to assess its reliability is to look at the data for Omoda and Jaecoo, brands that share Chery Group's engineering and manufacturing, and both have attracted strong owner satisfaction since their launch in the UK in 2024.
A good point to mention is that Chery submitted its cars for independent safety testing early in the UK launch process, which is a meaningful signal of confidence in the product.
The Chery warranty is one of the strongest arguments in the brand's favour. Every Chery comes with a 7-year / 100,000-mile manufacturer's warranty, which is roughly double the industry average, and on a par with Kia, which built its UK reputation in large part on exactly this kind of reassurance.
For a brand that's new to British buyers, a long warranty is more than a marketing point. It's a genuine answer to the most important question any car buyer can ask: if something goes wrong, am I covered?

With a starting price of less than £20,000 for the Chery Tiggo 4, Chery is hard to beat, offering a standard specification that includes features many competitors charge extra for. The price, combined with the warranty length and the genuine real-world efficiency, makes it a very good choice.
The only downside to the Chery Tiggo is that we lack reliability data here in the UK, but as we’ve discussed above, it already has a strong foundation in other international markets.

Chery launched in the UK in September 2025. However, the group's sister brands Omoda and Jaecoo have been on UK roads since 2024, giving the wider Chery family an established foothold in the market.
At the time of writing, Chery's UK range uses petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The Super Hybrid models offer up to 56 miles of electric-only range. Pure electric models may follow as the UK range develops.
On the Tiggo 7, Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 9 Super Hybrid models, the plug-in hybrid system pairs a 1.5-litre petrol engine with two electric motors and an 18.4kWh battery. You can charge it at home or at a public charge point using 40kW DC charging, which takes the battery from 30% to 80% in around 20 minutes.
Most Chery vehicles are built in the company's factories in Wuhu, China. Chery has also established local manufacturing in markets including Brazil, Iran, and Egypt. The company has indicated it would consider a UK production facility if demand grows sufficiently.
