Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) Cars

Do you regularly visit or commute to London by car? Then you’ll need to make sure your vehicle is compliant with the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) to avoid any charges. 

Implemented by London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, the ULEZ scheme was created to help clean up the city's air and help reduce vehicle-caused pollutants. There’s no way of avoiding ULEZ as the scheme is in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, throughout 364 days a year, so the only exception to the rule is Christmas Day.

London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) Fees and Fines

So what happens if you drive into London’s ULEZ in a non-compliant car? Well, in short, you will need to pay to do so. The capital’s vast 140 square mile zone is monitored by a vast network of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras which pictures every vehicle travelling in and out of the area.

If you travel within ULEZ in a vehicle that doesn’t meet emission standards, you will be charged £12.50 per day, every day you drive inside the zone. Non-compliant vehicles include cars, motorcycles, vans and specialist vehicles up to and including 3.5 tonnes, and minibuses up to and including 5 tonnes of weight. 

Transport for London will issue a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) if you drive within ULEZ and do not pay the daily charge for a non-compliant car. Charges are as follows:

It’s worth noting that people living in the Congestion Charge area (which covers the same area as ULEZ) are no longer exempt from the free daily ULEZ charge.
