What is part exchange?

A part exchange is an alternative way of selling your car. Part exchange happens when you sell your car as part of a deal that will help you pay for a new vehicle. Think of it as a trade-in process whereby you can sell your old car - usually to an authorised car dealership - in order to upgrade to a newer model.  

How do you part-exchange a car?

The part exchange process tends to vary depending on the car dealership. Here at Wilsons Epsom, you can part exchange your car in three very easy steps: 

To get you started, we’ll ask you to value your vehicle using our free online valuation tool. Should you be happy to proceed based on the quote supplied, we’ll then invite you to Wilsons in person, to give your vehicle an inspection while you enjoy a tea or coffee. All being well, the sale will go through and you’ll be well on the way to choosing your new car!   

Can you part exchange a car on finance?

If you don’t own the car outright, then there are still options to part exchange your car if it’s on a PCP (Personal Contract Purchase) deal, for example. Firstly, you’ll need to contact the lender, check your current finance agreement and ask for a settlement amount too. Secondly, you’ll need a valuation from the dealer so you can understand how much you’re able to offset against a new purchase.   

Should you part exchange your car?

The answer to this question really comes down to personal preference and your priorities. The benefits of a part exchange deal are aplenty, especially if you have your eyes on a brand new vehicle. How should a car be presented for part exchange?

Although the temptation is to handover the vehicle in its current state, it really is important to ensure your car is thoroughly cleaned inside and out. You must also make sure you’ve addressed any outstanding issues as previously agreed by the dealership. In addition to the above, you’ll be expected to provide the following upon handover:

  • The V5 logbook.
  • MOT certificate.
  • The car’s manual.
  • Up-to-date service book. 
  • Car keys (both sets if you have them).

All our vehicles are subject to an Admin Fee. Our Admin Fee covers any additional administration needed during your transaction, including a thorough provenance check (HPI Check). The vehicle provenance investigation checks if a car has finance owing, is stolen, cloned, written off or clocked, giving you real confidence in your car. Our vehicle checks carried out during preparation also include a cosmetic and mechanical assessment of each vehicle. The admin fee also includes the cost to fully valet, register and, if necessary, MOT your vehicle (if less than 6 months left of current MOT).
