Road Tax Rates For 2020 (VED)

April 2020 has seen vehicle tax change once more. Rates are now calculated based on figures from the new WLTP emissions figures. The new Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Testing Procedure (WLTP) is more representative of real-world driving, and encourages manufacturers to produce cleaner models. In addition, annual rates have increased slightly in line with inflation and the supplement for vehicles worth more than £40,000 no longer applies to electric cars.

What does that mean for me?

If your new vehicle’s emissions don’t exceed 75g/km of CO2, nothing changes – the cost of road tax for the first year remains the same as between April 2017 and March 2020. For vehicles with up to 130g/km of CO2 emissions, you’ll have to pay an additional £5 in the first year. Thereafter, first year tax costs increase rather more depending on your car’s emissions. The annual rate after the first year remains the same as before.

So how much is road tax a year?

Cars need to meet minimum emission standards when travelling in the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) or the daily charge must be paid.
