Penalty Points and Fines for Using a Handheld Mobile Phone to Double

Under new rules coming into force from 1st March 2017, drivers caught using a handheld mobile fine while behind the wheel will get six points on their license and face a £200 fine. This will increase from the current law in place which fines drivers £100 and gives them three points.

These new rules will apply to England, Scotland and Wales and could mean that newly qualified drivers will have their license revoked if they are caught within two years of passing their test. The changes have removed the opportunity for offenders to complete the National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme (NDORS) training course as an alternative to receiving points on their license. In addition, if more experienced drivers are caught offending twice they could face going to court with fines up to £1,000 and at least a six month driving ban.

On the proposed new measures, Prime Minister Theresa May said.

"We need to work with the public to raise awareness of the dangers of using a mobile phone when driving. Just as we have made it socially unacceptable to drink and drive, so we need to do the same with using a mobile phone while driving.

"The sentence should fit the crime for those who kill or seriously injure on our roads and it should deter other drivers from causing needless harm just for the sake of taking a call or sending a text."
