Cutting our Corporate Carbon Footprint

Wilsons is proud to be introducing sustainable solutions for a greener future of car selling

As the largest family-run new and used car supermarket in the South of England, it's important that we not only give back to our local communities, but also consider our impact on the environment too.

At Wilsons Epsom, we’ve been proudly selling new and used cars to motorists in Surrey and beyond for almost 120 years now. We’re not only dedicated to providing the very best service to our customers, but have also pledged our commitment to a sustainable future of business too.

Cutting our corporate carbon footprint is a responsibility we don't take lightly, which is why we’ve recently implemented some new measures to help speed up the process. We’re always looking at ways in which we can improve our existing environmental policies, because Wilsons is a company that cares.

Read on to discover the ways in which we’re making a difference…

Speeding up the transition to an electric vehicle future

Here at Wilsons Epsom, we're driving the switch to electric, which is why we are big advocates for electric vehicles. As the UK’s commitment to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars looms ever close to the 2035 deadline, we’re shifting our attention to selling hybrid and fully electric vehicles.

We’re proud to be electric vehicle experts, so if you’re thinking of making the transition to a new or used EV, then you can rely on Wilsons to help get you on the road to a greener future of travel. Explore the latest and greatest electric vehicle models, which are pushing the boundaries of zero emission technology for an overall safer and cleaner driving experience.

From the game changing Nissan LEAF - which paved the way for the electric cars we know and love today - to the groundbreaking Hyundai IONIQ 5, which boasts cutting-edge electric technology and the latest eco-materials. Head over to the EV and Hybrid section of our website to find out more.

On site pod points for electric vehicle charging

As electric vehicle experts, we have installed over 20 Pod Point EV charging units at our state-of-the-art multi-showroom site located in Epsom, Surrey. Wilsons employees, customers and visitors can take advantage of these handy charging stations which are conveniently placed and easy to operate.

Used by some of the UK’s top companies, Pod Point’s workplace chargers are compatible with all plug-in electric vehicle brands, making them the number one choice. By offering free-to-use EV chargers, we are not only boosting the benefits for our staff, but rewarding customers who choose a plug-in model too.

The ability for workplace charging is a critical decision in meeting the UK’s charging needs and overall EV infrastructure. Pod Point’s ‘Array Charging’ intelligence system allows users to plug in at any point during the day for an instant charge.

Solar panels to harness energy from the sun

Although you may not know it (unless you get a bird’s-eye view of our building) the roof of our showrooms here at Wilsons Epsom are quite literally covered in hundreds of solar panels. Generating renewable electricity, each solar panel works by capturing the sun’s energy and converting it into usable electricity.

Solar panels typically generate what’s called ‘direct current’ electricity - also known as DC. In order to utilise the energy for use within our dealership, an inverter is installed to convert the DC electricity into ‘alternating current’ (or AC) which is typically used for most household appliances. Thanks to the power of AC, we can reuse the electricity generated from our solar panels and export any unused energy back to the main grid - now that’s win-win!

In fact, during the month of June 2022, our solar roof panels generated an incredible £5,500 worth of electricity! Whatever energy we don’t use in the dealership, we put back into the national grid.

Switching to a sustainable system

As part of our efforts to reduce the company’s carbon footprint, we have implemented a paperless pledge across the business. We’ve switched our online practices to a system called iDealFILE, so that all of our forms are dealt with digitally. All of our ‘paperwork’ is now stored and managed online, which has reduced the amount of paper used and wasted within our dealership.

All forms can now be electronically signed which means less paperwork for you, and a more seamless filing system for us. Unless a customer doesn’t have access to an email account, you will receive a digital copy of all associated paperwork, so we won’t print your documents.

Overall, our newly-adopted iDealFILE administrative system saves costs, saves time, and boosts environmental credentials by helping us to remove at least 90% of all paper requirements from our sales departments.

But our sustainable journey won’t stop there; we’re constantly looking at ways in which we can continue to reduce our carbon footprint, enhance our environmental policy and contribute to a better and brighter future for the next generation.
