When looking for a small SUV or SUV Crossover you wouldn't be blamed for looking at the Nissan Qashqai, but do you really need to spend that much? To those on a tighter budget, the Dacia Duster represents a small, rugged SUV that is price competitive with the Nissan Micra.
SUV buyers in the UK have known about the outstanding qualities of the Dacia Duster for three years now, having initially launched in 2013 after a successful reception in continental Europe. Dacia has since added two new trim levels, Ambiance Prime and Prestige, which include exclusive Chestnut metallic paint and 16" 'Everest' alloy wheels on the Ambiance Prime trim. The top of the range Prestige trim provides a reversing camera, rear parking sensors and Media Nav as standard to enhance your driving experience to the maximum.
With Dacia, affordable doesn't have to mean unattractive - it is the high-street fashion of the car manufacturing world. The New Duster has been created with a muscular design that includes a raised ride height and extended wheel arches and rugged good looks from its imposing front grille and double-optic headlamps.
The Duster is an imposing vehicle with undeniable road presence, due to the impression of height given by its substantial ground clearance. Its exterior dimensions, however, are similar to those of a mid-sized saloon. At 4316mm long and 2000mm wide, it is easy navigate any urban jungle and park.
Meanwhile, its 2673mm wheelbase and 10.4 metre turning circle allows excellent manoeuvrability when negotiating the obstacles and hazards of built-up areas.
The Duster's impressive size oozes practicality and functionality, as it is easily able to carry 5 people and boasts 475 litres of boot space.
A fine level of performance on urban and suburban roads is also assured, due to the smooth power and torque delivery of the three engines available (two 1.5 litre turbodiesels with 84 or 104bhp, and a single 1.6 litre petrol unit offering 114bhp).
The finely tuned transmission adds to the smooth progress, whilst a soft suspension capably soaks up all the jolts and bumps presented by the scarred British roads. Fuel consumption of 53.3mpg and CO2 emissions of 137g/km (39.8mpg and 160g/km continue the Duster's overarching theme of more driving enjoyment for less money.
The power and structural strength of the Duster also give it notable abilities off-road. All models, with the exception of the front-wheel drive Laureate model (which trades a small amount of traction for 66 litres of extra space) come with four-wheel drive. Ground clearance of 210mm and an extra-short first gear ratio enable you to manoeuvre comfortably, even over very rough terrains.
Inside, a high driving position assures maximum visibility and comfort for the driver, whilst even large adult passengers can enjoy the excellent amount of headroom and legroom. The Duster offers maximum storage space of 1,570 litres (or 1,636 litres in the case of the front-wheel version).

Based on Renault-Nissan Alliance four-wheel-drive technology, Duster is not your average urban soft-roader. More than capable of tackling the rough terrains, all 4x4 versions feature a 3-mode, 4x4 system as standard (2WD, Auto and Lock), which enables the Duster to adapt to driving conditions, making safer, more confident progress much easier.
Each of the three modes has its own specific uses and advantages. 2WD mode is best used on road surfaces with good grip and motorways to provide the best possible fuel consumption. This mode distributes engine torque to the front wheels. Automatic mode however automatically distributes engine torque to all four wheels to provide the best grip available. The advantage of this system is the best balance between road-holding and traction which works on all types of surfaces and grip conditions, but is most effectively employed in slippery conditions such as rain, snow, ice and mud. Finally, Lock mode provides maximum off-road capability by directing engine torque to all four wheels with engine control and braking optimised for off-road usage.
The Duster's impressive ground clearance and wide approach and departure angles at the front and rear of the car enable it to negotiate tough obstacles over rugged ground. It is equally comfortable in urban and off-road surroundings thanks to its solid structure built to withstand difficult terrains, yet light weight (under 1300kg) and compact enough to be agile when conditions demand quick reactions.
